Rapp Funeral Services was founded in 1982 by Richard and Ellen Rapp to provide the Washington area with a low-cost alternative to traditional funeral homes. Since the Rapps retired in 1999, their philosophy and approach have been continued by the new owner, Stephen Lohrmann, who was already providing a similar alternative funeral service in the Baltimore area.

    Since receiving his mortuary  science degree in 1982, Stephen has  shown a rare combination of  professional skill and personal  devotion to helping people cope with  death. Featured in newspapers  throughout the country, Stephen has  made Rapp a model for how funeral  homes can meet people's needs in  today's society. He and his staff look forward to helping you by providing a choice you can live with.
    In September 2008, Stephen was awarded a Governor's Citation by Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley. The award lauded Stephen's "compassionate commitment to the community," his "demonstration of high integrity and ability, meriting our great trust and respect," and "appreciation of your outstanding services to the citizens of this State."

FACILITIES

   Rapp’s main facility, located at 933 Gist Avenue in Silver Spring, can accommodate gatherings of up to 50 to 75 people. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Gatherings also may be held at churches, cemeteries, and other locations.
    Cremations are performed at Rapp’s affiliated company Chesapeake Crematory Inc. (CCI), in Beltsville. If you arrange a cremation through Rapp, you also may arrange to attend the cremation at CCI for a funeral service or a witnessing if you so desire.
